FAQ

Lyme disease can affect dogs, cats, horses, cattle, birds and humans.  White tailed deer and white-footed mice are the natural carriers of Lyme.  Deer ticks are the most known ticks that carry the disease.  Other ticks may also be hosts and transmit the disease.

The tick attaches and feeds on the host.  The borrelia organism is transferred to the host within 10-24 of being attached.  The borrelia organism is a corkscrew shaped baterium that causes the Lyme Disease.

Common Signs of Lyme:

  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Joint swelling and pain
  • Swollen Lymph nodes

More serious signs:

  • Heart disorder
  • Brain disorder
  • Joint disorder

The most common sign that we see on a regular basis linked to Lyme Disease is Arthritic behavior such as limping, painful getting up and down stairs.

Treatment may require weeks of antibiotics.  The response of treatment will depend on your pet's general health and resistance to the disease.

Can we get Lyme Disease from our pet?  The only way we can get Lyme from our pet is if we were to remove the tick and the infected tick were to feed on us.  You can not contract the disease by touching your pet.  Other pets in the household can only be affected if the infected tick were to travel from pet to pet.

How to prevent Lyme Disease:

Frontline Plus.*  It is a safe and effective flea and tick control product that is easily applied to the skin of your pet.  It works with the natural oils in your pet's coat.  Once a flea or tick walks through the hair on your pet, the Frontline Plus is then spread to the flea and tick killing them.

Always inspect your pet after long walks in the yard, woods, parks and meadows.  Try to remove any ticks found with tweezers to avoid crushing it.

Notify the Doctor if any of the following occur:
  • You are unable to administer the flea/tick preventative.
  • Your pet's condition appears to worsen.
  • You continue to find ticks on your pet.

*BEWARE of online sales of these medications.  While they prove to be less expensive, they may not even be the same medication!  These products are sold to veterinarians only.  The online pharmacies may not stock these products correctly, causing them to be ineffective.
